Okay I know I said I wasn't going to blog about Appmon but I'm 26 episodes in and have to give some general impressions
First and foremost, I don't know if I'm enjoying Appmon because it's good, or if I'm enjoying it because the other Digimon series I have watched recently have been so terribly dull in comparison. Was Appmon fresh at the time it aired and would I have liked it for that then, or does it just feel fresh to me right now because my points of reference are Adventure 2020 and Ghost Game, series that functionally have no plot or characters and wherein nothing happens or changes significantly, and whose director is trying to kill me, specifically, through boring me out of my skull? It's hard to say.
Regardless I will take this opportunity to thank villains, characters that have goals, and story arcs as a concept for existing in Appmon. Finally, some delicious fucking food.
On that note I don't really have any big complaints against this series yet. I'm not a big enough fan of Digimon as a franchise to claim I feel any sort of way about it being too different, even though the ways in which it is different are super ultra apparent even to me from episode one, wherein we meet our shy green-haired protagonist. I will concede that I don't care personally for the designs of most things in Appmon, but not because they aren't like previous designs -- just because I'm 27 and don't like blue-eyed rainbow haired anythings, really.
Tumblr media
But other than weirdly dated designs I am enjoying a lot of little things about my viewing experience, such as:
Crazy fast, snappy editing, particularly in the first few episodes?
The fact I can skip around 5-6 minutes per episode with the OP, ED, and various transformation scenes. Makes binging faster and easier, For Me.
Fun insert music. Even though I hate the sfx for the transformation sequences, the music is good!
Rival characters, thank youuuu.
I am actually interested in whatever the hell is going on with Yuujin, and whatever the hell is going on with Rei and his digitally kidnapped little brother.
The relationships each main character has with their appmons are very cute. And in general I like the idea of being able to take the data of defeated appmons and using them as powerups or for fusion, etc. And although the concept that "every phone app has a appmon equivalent" is very dumb, I like that all of the appmon have really specific powers because of it.
Mission Statements!
CG looks decent for 2016, and it suits the sort of mechanical designs of the main appmons.
These trick-or-treaters:
Tumblr media
So, onwards to the 2nd half of Appmon!

Why Digimon Ghost Game is Episodic
Background
Note: a lot of this is sourced from @RavelMonte on Twitter, who has a lot of great translations and threads about Digimon production across the franchise.
Tumblr media
Recently, there was a soundbite going around where the lead writer of Digimon Ghost Game explained that one reason for the episodic structure of the show is to adapt to the shorter attention spans of children these days. While I don't think that's true (well, attention spans may actually be getting shorter, I do believe that -- but at least, anecdotally it seems that people are more hungry for serialized stories, not less, and that is one of the reasons why anime is getting so popular worldwide). But as Ravel points out, there's another goal here, which is part of the Digimon Reboot project (thread linked below):
Tumblr media
I'm no expert when it comes to these things, but one thing that's important in the media mix business model (which Digimon has always been a part of) is the term 世界観 (sekaikan = worldview). You may have heard this term used in interviews from various Japanese creators. In a media mix structure, the central element is not necessarily a fixed plot or even necessarily characters (characters can be part of a worldview, but not necessarily a specific iteration of a character -- we can see this in the 2020 Digimon Adventure series, where the 8 chosen children remain but their personalities and arcs change drastically). Contrast with something like Star Wars which is continually forced to fit everything into one consistent universe and timeline. Obviously there must be more to media mixes and I'm not an expert on the topic, but I think this video is really well presented and informative:
youtube
So anyway, to summarize Ravel's thread and its implications for Ghost Game, one of the main purposes of this show is to unite the disparate elements of the franchise (and everyone knows Digimon is all over the place, especially after the flagship game series known in the west as Digimon World vacillated between raising simulator, dungeon crawler, and musou-style action RPG in just 4 entries). The purpose of the Digimon reboot, brought on by a producer on the (formerly?) successful Aikatsu media mix empire, is not really to "reboot" the franchise and create a new worldview, but rather to slowly incorporate all the existing branches of the franchise as much as possible into one worldview.
Monsters of the Week
One more or less obvious way that this is reflected in Ghost Game (and even more so in the 2020 Adventure reboot) is the choice of monster of the week. There are a few new mons altogether, but also a lot of mons that never appeared in an anime. Of course, every few weeks there is a public update to the newly curated reference book:
I'm only 27 episodes in but let's take a look at the roster of monsters of the week.
There are a few "fan favorite" Digimon like Digitamamon, Arukenimon, Mummymon, and Vamdemon that were villains in former series.
A Deva Digimon from Tamers (Majiramon)
Bokomon from Frontier
Splashmon and Pilomon from Xros Wars
Morphomon from the epilogue film Digimon Last Adventure Kizuna
Some armored evolutions (a concept introduced in Adventure 02, though there are many mons that had never appeared in the anime). For example, Quetzalmon is an armored evolution of Wormmon (a partner in 02) that had previously only appeared in a V-Pet, the original TCG, and some video games. Fans probably do know a lot of these mons from seeing them around.
Mons like Ginkakumon and Sirenmon that were introduced in an online version of the original TCG.
Black variants like BlackTailmon and BlackAgumon.
There are still a few elements of the franchise missing, for example X Antibody Digimon from the CG film Digimon X Evolution and Spirit Digimon from Frontier (though the pre-evolutions to Spirit Digimon did appear in Adventure 2020). There's some lore like the Royal Knights, Three Archangels, Olympus Twelve, Seven Demon Lords, or Four Holy Beasts that may or may not be referenced as well. It's not likely, but it would be cool if they added in Appmon too. But for the most part, these last two anime have really drawn from the entire franchise and made an effort to feature a diversity of mons.
Themes
Despite Ghost Game being episodic, even at 27 episodes I can already see an overarching narrative emerging. I don't mean the hints that appear once every few episodes about GulusGamamon and Hiro's dad. There's another story, about all the Digimon that game to the human world and the ways in which they interact and try (and sometimes fail) to fit in. This sort of worldbuilding again draws from all across the franchise thematically.
One major element that we may worry about is, what are Digimon even, and what is the Digital World? Whereas previous series went into depth about the creation of Digimon (notably 02 and Tamers) or the structure of the world (Frontier), Ghost Game notably does not. It's entirely possible, though unlikely in my opinion, that the main trio never go to the Digital World at all. What's more important is that Digimon already exist, they're in the real world now, and though they were trapped there by some malevolent (?) force, this does not seem to be part of some coordinated assault on the human world. They're just there, living their lives. And already we see some interesting implications of this.
For one, there's our main cast, the symbol of harmony between Digimon and humans (as noted by Bokomon, this may make the main trio very important in the future). But there are also more general ideas of a "Digimon partner" (though, since it is shown that Ruri can team up with Jellymon, that concept may be more flexible than in past seasons). Take for example Ajatarmon in episode 24, who loved a particular human so badly it wanted to become one, or Koemon in episode 14, who is grieving over the loss of a human friend. There's also the scientist who we briefly see experimenting Morphomon, in a reference to Last Evolution Kizuna. These storylines usually end with some kind of compromise, though in the case of Ajatarmon we see that sometimes the alienation is too strong to overcome. This is reminiscent of the early, episodic parts of Digimon Savers which saw Digimon integrating into the real world, often as allies but not necessarily partners (my favorite is Piyomon).
Then there's Digimon that are only interested in using humans to meet their own needs, like Sistermon (need for speed), Digitamamon (sees humans as food), Arukenimon (ditto but more horrifying), Kinkakumon (desires a strong opponent), Splashmon (desires moisturizer), or Zassoumon (Gremlins from the movie Gremlins). These can sometimes be reasoned with, but more often than not this kind of encounter ends in violence. This reminds me of the early parts of Adventure, where the concern for the main protagonists was basically surviving this strange world as just another link in the food chain.
There's plenty of Digimon who want nothing to do with humans, notably Angoramon's friends and the ice Digimon from episode 17, but don't have any particular ill will towards them either, possibly unless provoked.
Plenty of Digimon try to help humans only for it to backfire, like Mummymon (wants to be a doctor), Sirenmon (cheer humans with songs), Petermon (save the children), Piximon (chaotic neutral), or DarkLizamon and Seadramon who end up desperate for a way home. Some of them can find a way to fit in, some of them can be convinced to go do something less harmful, but this category tends to be the most unpredictable.
And then there's a handful of malicious Digimon, though notably only one (Vamdemon) has expressed any interest in conquering or destroying the world as far as I can tell. The rest just want to cause mayhem or hurt humans for fun. Rarely they can be reasoned with, but mostly this ends in violence. There are lots of these types of encounters in Tamers and Savers.
Notably, all the previous series were heavily serialized, so eventually this variety of monster of the week conflicts gave way sooner or later to a big bad. Sometimes, it's revealed that all the bad guys were controlled by one super bad guy all along. Other times, like in Frontier, the stakes are clear from the start and the villains remain consistent. But Ghost Game, at least so far, doesn't seem interested in that kind of plot. Instead, it focuses on coming up with often pretty creative ways for Digimon and humans to interact, not schemed up by some genius villain but just as a result of their own desires. Notably, the one Digimon who did seem to be sent on orders by a villain (Sealsdramon), turns out to just enjoy killing for fun. This is an interesting twist on the usual structure, and I think it definitely gives this one series more room to explore those kinds of dynamics.
I've been watching a lot of episodic shows lately, such as another long-running Toei series, Precure. Compared to a lot of episodic and formulaic shows of this sort, Ghost Game really is pretty unique. There's not just one solution to every problem. When I'm watching Precure, sometimes I'm frustrated that a particular fight just seems like an excuse to show the transformation, instead of another vehicle for increasing our understanding of the characters. But I rarely feel that way about Ghost Game, even though it is true that most episodic conflicts don't have any implications for the characters really. Instead, the episodic structure is used to flesh out the world itself.

Digimon Adventure: 2020 – Episode 27: To The New Continent (Review)
Thoughts on the twenty-seventh episode of the Digimon Adventure reboot series.
This is a day later than usual. It happens. Sorry. :P
Hikari is genuinely creepy, lmao. What exactly is Toei going for here? Unmoving child mannequin doll, who quietly kills you in your sleep? If so, spot on! :P
You know the moment Takeru turns to look at Hikari? I hope he’s not going to start crushing on this creepy little girl. If I were him, I would quietly step back from her, lol.
Koushirou continues being a whiz kid. Cool, cool. I guess.
Agumon to Hikari: “Are you OK? You’re not scared?” No, Agumon, get with the program! She’s the one scaring us! XD;
Sora: “Is Takeru the little brother you mentioned before?” Yamato: “Yeah. He was called here as the Holy Digimon’s partner.” Yamato should’ve been like, “No, bish, he just looks like a tiny version of me.” SQUEE AT THIS SORATO INTERACTION. XD; Also, translated, this conversation actually goes - Sora: “Is this my future brother-in-law?” Yamato: “Yeah, babe.” NO, I WILL NOT STRIKE THIS. XD; Also, Sora, Yamato and Takeru were framed together later - IT’S THE SORATO FAMILY, YOU GUYS! IT’S BEGINNING!!! <3
Jou continues to be a joke, lol. Even his digimon treats him like one. orz
Did Leomon just die? Or did he and the others just disappear somewhere? Unsure. But BYEEE! :P
Mimi on Birdramon: “It’s too high! I’m gonna cry!” Palmon: “Don’t look down, Mimi!” Sora: “Only look forward, Mimi-chan! We’re almost at land!” I like little moments like this where the characters care about and help one another. :)
Taichi jumping off Kabuterimon with Agumon, to land on the evolved Greymon, all whilst in the air . . . is so utterly ridiculous. YOU ARE NOT SUPERMAN, CHILD! I need a better level of realism in this show, OK. :P
I did like seeing Koushirou being protective of Hikari, and Jou being protective of Takeru. It warms my cold heart. :)
I also liked how menacing they made Groundramon. Worthy opponents are neat.
That was nice of Toei to remember that Garurumon and Greymon have personalities. The two interacted as old buddies again. Woot!
Wow, Togemon and especially Ikkakumon came really close to being eaten! I felt scared for them. But I don’t know why this surprised me so much when Taichi was actually literally eaten by DoneDevimon, lol.
I really liked seeing all the kids and their digimon fighting together. More of this, please!
Taichi surging ahead towards Groundramon, being courageous with MetalGreymon’s special mode, felt epic and all that . . . but outside of the moment, you’ll remember that most of the kids are that courageous too, so their awe of him falls a little flat. YOU GUYS CAN DO IT TOO, I SAW YOU! :P The moment did add to Taichi’s leadership though, so - great.
Angemon died quite recently and now he’s back so easily because Takeru wants to fight too, lol. I did like Patamon growing wings to evolve though, he looked like a neat holy pig there. :)
THIS NEW ENDING ART IS GORGEOUS! I’m in love. They all looked so cute, even Hikari! THE CREEPY CHILD IS ACTUALLY CAPABLE OF HAVING FUN!? Also, can Sora please swap her pink outfit for her winter outfit? Girl looked amazing!
Next week’s preview: “The separated children’s fight for survival begins!” . . . WHAT. THE. FUCK. TOEI!? You split them up for ages just to finally bring them back together again FOR ONE WHOLE EPISODE - only to FUCKING SPLIT THEM UP AGAIN IN THE NEXT!? Holy shit. Are you even paying attention to your viewers!? -_-
I really liked the episode the first time I saw it, just because I was super excited about everyone being back together again and interacting, etc. It brings me immense joy to see my kids all together. However . . . it was a pretty weak episode, lol. I would’ve liked it if the kids had just caught up with each other and rested for a slow, introspective episode. But that is just something the reboot refuses to deliver! :P
And, I swear to God, if they really do split up the kids again next episode - it better be for a REALLY temporary time period! Like, first half of the episode, and together by the end, lol. I can’t with Toei. WHY PLAY US LIKE THAT!? XD;

It has been announced that there will be a 3rd ending of Digimon Adventure: 2020 starting episode 27. Considering that the 2nd ending had Takeru, and he showed up and couple of episodes after that. It seems that Hikari will be showing up by episode 27

Review: Digimon Adventure: (2020) Episode 27: To The New Continent
Tumblr media
In this episode, Patamon trolls everyone by only evolving after the rest of the team ekes out a narrow win.
There are moments during each series that you just salivate waiting for because you know they’re going to be epic. The fall of an arc’s villain. A team finally coming together for a big united battle. The unleashing of a promised new power. When you’re looking at a show that’s entirely driven by story and action, the payoffs for these moments have to click. As much as this season lacks, it has pulled some of these off. DoneDevimon’s defeat may have been narratively awkward but you can’t say it wasn’t big or memorable. And the big united team wins over Gorimon and Eyesmon remain epic highlights. So there’s decent odds that Angemon’s triumphant return is going to blow us away, right? Time to be let down again…
With the team finally reunited and after an intense run of fighting evil incarnate and sitting in a gazebo, maybe we expected too much in thinking there would be actual personality revealed. Instead of talking about anything interesting, the two sides slog through the formalities of catching up. Hikari continues to be as creepy as ever, staring at Taichi with dead eyes and no idea what’s happening. Her introduction to Takeru is spotlighted to be a big moment, our two cryptids meeting for the first time, shippers all ready to make hasty assumptions about them. It’s the most generic exchange imaginable. There should be something notable about Hikari not being fazed by the presence of Digimon, but neither was Sora and there’s nothing notable about her this season.
Beyond the bland interactions and the traditional act of Joe making a fool of himself, the priority shifts instead to Koshiro somehow managing to upgrade the Digimon analyzer in the spare time he didn’t have, and watching the Zurumon they left behind continue to unleash havoc on the real world. Real world implications have always added to the pressure of what our heroes are trying to do, but unless the trouble is nearby, there’s a ceiling where it just becomes a generic “the world is in trouble.” As dramatic as the sight of a NASA rocket exploding at launch is, it’s all detached from the reality the kids are in. Much like the tanker crisis, they’re watching everything through a computer screen, and none of them have a personal stake in anything. As far as they’re concerned, everything happening now is a step down from Tokyo nearly getting nuked in the first three episodes.
The rocky arrival on the new continent and their run-ins with the Tortamon and Groundramon build on the nature of the post-Devimon world, morphing into this Tamers-esque environment where everybody’s trying to kill each other to gain more evolution power. It’s an unsettling development, but also rapidly devolving into an excuse to give us a monster every week that doesn’t have any connection to the overall story. Groundramon is visually imposing and gives everybody a good battle, but he’s functionally pointless once it’s established that he’s found a new interpretation to the term “turtle power.” Everybody contributes enough to the fight, but naturally it comes down to Taichi’s heroics, a combination of strategic ingenuity and utter recklessness that’s almost a little too clever to root for.
It’s one of those episodes that would have worked better had we just been able to write it off as more filler and move on to something hopefully meaningful. But its attempt at significance drags it down even more with a tacked-on appearance by DarkKnightmon. His presence on the new continent is totally predictable (as evidenced by us predicting it two episodes ago!); the only surprise is that they’d waste his debut at the end of a throwaway episode like this, all out of desperation for some sort of cliffhanger.
Compounding the problem is that they wasted yet another big moment: Angemon’s big return. There’s no warning for it, no big moment of personal growth. The show forgets Takeru exists half the time and we have no idea who he is beyond brother to Yamato and puppet to the Holy Digimon. But suddenly here comes Angemon, a tidy seven episodes after his initial death. Without the emotional buildup, what should be a triumphant moment is met with a shrug. Especially because Takeru and Patamon just watched the rest of their team get their asses kicked by Groundramon for twenty minutes. They didn’t consider maybe jumping in and helping out during all that?
My Grade: C
Loose Data:
Sora checking with Yamato that Takeru was “the brother” sounded less like actual interest in Yamato’s family and more confirming that Yamato’s story was actually true. With that tone she could have asked for ID.
Farewell Team Leomon. Rest assured we’d rather follow you guys, wherever you ended up. We’re even going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you survived that storm. With this series, that takes a lot of trust!
If you want a perfect example of how lazy the show is about showing character, look at Koshiro’s lack of reaction to Taichi throwing Hikari into his care. Any sort of discomfort about suddenly being responsible for his friend’s little sister could offer clues about Koshiro’s family situation, or his surprise at the degree Taichi trusts him. In episode 36 of the original series, Yamato really struggled when Taichi left Hikari in his care and it was beautiful. That’s also the same episode Joe got an new evolution over his determination to protect Takeru.
The level of acrobatics Taichi continuously has to perform to jump and land on Greymon is getting borderline ridiculous. Of course, his insistence on always riding Greymon already is.
Sadly, the best character interaction of the episode was Greymon teasing Garurumon before their fight with the Tortamon. And even that doesn’t give us anything new!
Mimi freaks out atop Birdramon but is absolutely fine once she lands, even saying that it was a fun trip. We appreciate that Mimi’s doing her best to be interesting, even joining us in complaining about DarkKnightmon’s gratuitous appearance!

Digimon Adventure 2020 episode 29
Escape the burning jungle🔥
This episode was fire.. I loved everything about it.. Here's my biggest edit tribute yet of an episode on this series..
The fights moments were incredible.. The way Taichi acted and even that deep down he is sad about what Hikari did and how she left him and Skullnightmon kidnapped her, I loved the way he expressedhis emotionsduring the episode especially at the near end.. Agumon encouraging Taichi to not give up.. And others support him.. How woodmon and those cute budmon and of course our others holy digimon Lopmon apeard... Taichi caring and holding him like that was so precious.. The sadness we got from seeing those poor digimons die.. Seeing the rule of this digital world and how life goes in it.. The crazy situation that like Koushiro said it's the calm before storm.. Mimi, Joe, Takeru, Yamato's actions during the episode.. And how lovely a s surprisingly Sora apeard.. it was so precious that those little digimons fought alongside Taichi to help him.. Even tho they were week it was a nice touch.. And the hype at the end that it's not over...
I'm surprised how some people say this episode was a waste of time.. It has a lot of great moments and feelings it.. It was incredible.
